*Participation: 0 Absences, 60 points; 1 Absence, 55 points; 3 Absences, 45 points; 4 Absences, 40 points; 5 Absences, 30 points; 6 Absences, 20 points; 7+ Absences, 0 points. Excused absences are ONLY considered in the case of an emergency, counted with supporting note and dated document. If there are significant conflicts which you foresee in the upcoming term (i.e., work or obligation—NOT vacation), please come see at the beginning of the term. You need to be in class in order to participate, and your presence is both required and desired for questions and discussion.
1. Participation: Being present and participating is important, and I use an exponential scale in regards to your presence and participation—Missing one week won’t make a difference in your overall score, but missing 2 or more class meetings will begin to affect your grade. (See the above scale)
There are NO MAKE-UP EXAMS or Quizzes. Late papers will automatically have points deducted. Please turn-in only your work done for this class. Students caught with plagiarized papers or work will automatically fail the class, with letters sent to your department. On the other hand, diligent work and honesty are heartily rewarded with the satisfaction felt in truly developing skills and earning your own grade, whatever it may be, proudly earning it on your own.
2. Character Impersonation: Choose a prominent person from the reading or documents, come to class in his or her "character" for 5 minutes (present them through their words/ deeds) and get the class to guess who you are--you will be assigned a week in which to present your character, and you can choose from that week's reading. Please do the following:
a-Email me your character no later than the previous Friday (& don't tell anyone who you are)
b-Email me a brief outline of significant dates and accomplishments (your outline here, please do not cut and paste from the web)
c-Please bring a hard copy of your emailed outline the day of your character presentation
3. Film/ Museum Week: No Class in the Week of 9/ 27, when you will be expected to watch a feature length film/ documentary, or go to a museum of your choice that addresses a class theme, Reconstruction through the Great Depression. A 4-5 page review is due the following week (no later).
4. TWO Document Reviews: The first Document Review is due in Week Eight, and you can choose from any of the docuements given in the these weeks (3-5 pages, worth 20 points). Then you will need to complete the second Doc Rev by 12/8 (6-8 pages, worth 60 points).
The purpose of these document reviews is to enable you to use broad textbook information in explaining the significance of a document, to give you some depth of understanding, and to help you study the text for the exams. Please see the Document Review Page for more information.
5. Four Reading Quizzes on Text and Document Reading, questions to be posted before the quizzes.
6. Two Midterm Exams: One will cover Reconstruction through the Great Depression, and the other, the New Deal to about 2000. Each Midterm Exam will include:
1-30 % Short Answer and/or Matching Questions (significant specifics)
2-10 % Short Answer Reading Question
3-60 % One Essay (you will be able to choose b/t two questions)
Please see the Exam Review Page before these exams for more information. |
